- slightly choppy + in about 3 or 4 hours
we were in the sheltered channels of
the [space left blank] Islands. Low + very rocky with
scrubby pines for vegetation.
In Helsinki: Sept [September] 27/52 [1952].
I awoke this morning to find that we were
anchored just inside the harbour entrance at
Helsinki. Here we remained for some 3 hours
on a grey day with Scotch mist falling.
A beautiful white naval launch came roaring
out + circled us while both ships solemnly
dipped flags. At 10 we ran into the wharf
+ unloaded to the accompaniment of filling
in entrance cards + currency declaration
forms. I was met by [Lauri] Siivonen + [Pertti] Koskimies
+ taken up to their office in the zoological
Institute. This building, a former Russian
military school houses an excellent if
somewhat old museum, the offices of
the Research Foundation + the Zoological
department of the university. We
lunched + chatted + discussed the general
game situation in Finland while
I got a general background for
my trip through the hinterland of their
game country.
At 5 we went out to the Siivonens
apartment where I met his wife +
