trots stiff legged out onto clear
ridge nearer me. Stops, fore
feet together, stares hard, snorts
loudly, licks nose, tests air
high + then at ground level, licks
nose, snorts 11 sec. [seconds] snorts, 7 sec. [seconds]
comes 5 yards closer, scratches
ear with hind hoof. Walks
slowly away stiff legged down wind.
At 75 yards begins feeding again
but in desultory fashion + looks
around her frequently + moving
more rapidly. At one point
suddenly jumped backward
and ran two or three steps, then
retraced herself.
When departing tail held at
horizontal. This position + the
stiff legged gait seem to be
associated as are the jump
+ an erect tail.
Mosquitoes moderately active + cause her to
move ears continuously.

In fir trees on E [east] hill, north
end 18 mos [months] doe feeding up hill, into
salal patch, moves fairly rapidly
feeding en route, watched her eat
