- Scaphiopus [underlined] Spadefoot toad
May 29/41 [1941] Found small pond between road +
Osoyoos Lake, just east of bridge crossing
Lake neck, where large numbers of large
tadpoles were feeding on surface.
Many had hind legs well-developed +
seemed shortly to break through front-legs.
Most were feeding from surface in muddy
shallows at each end of pond. Took
colour pictures of pond - Preserved several
dozen tad-poles.
May 30th [1941] Heard Scaphiopus calling near small
lake north of Oliver but did not locate
origin.
June 4th [1941] Heard Scaphiopus calling at Mission Flats,
Dom. Ent Lab. [Dominion Entomological Laboratory] Kamloops, B.C.
" [June] 5th [1941] Collected one toad at gate in front of Lab
building at night.
" [June] 6th [1941] Cowan [Ian McTaggart Cowan] collected 14 calling Scaphiopus
in small mud puddle in pig sty in
farm yard east of Lab building, Mission Flats.
Several pairs were in inguinal [underlined] amplexus +
continued even though the next day. One
male was clasping a female Hyla [underlined] which
was found to be dead next morning. Eggs
were visible through skin suggesting peritoneal
rupture.
