  • March 8/42 [1942] Goldstream Lakes. Food habits. Regarding browsing of Douglas fir noticed:- 1. Those young trees growing in heavy salal not browsed out of reach of the trails 2. Those growing in solitary or open stands on rocky bluffs 100% browsed. 3. One large area of trees with short light yellow green needles untouched while dark green trees adjacent heavily browsed. 4. Trees growing in dense clumps had only the marginal ones eaten. 5. Trees growing around edge of clearings heavily browsed 6. Heaviest browsing of close stands takes place where such are below or adjacent to open stands of mature trees supporting heavy usnea growth + with salal below + about. Probably this is because in such areas the deer have lots of food readily available
