  • Exhibition List 1 Yoshida Hiroshi, 1876-1950 (medium: woodblock), was a prominent figure in the modern Japanese print movement. Midway in his artistic career, he switched from oil painting to prints. He became his own publisher and hired the best carvers and printers he could find for his studio. His output was tremendous, and he portrayed scenes not only from Japan but also from India, China and the West. (a) Chionln Temple Gate, 1935, 23.9 x 37.3 cm, aggv (b) Hlrasakl Castle, 1935, 37.3 x 23.9 cm, aggv 2 Shinsui Ito, 1898-1972 (medium: woodblock), started out as a talented traditional painter noted for his portrayals of beautiful women in the ukiyo-e style. While he was still young, he became a print artist and came to produce some of the most outstanding woodblock prints of the twentieth century. (a) Fireworks, 1934, 41 x 25.5 cm, aggv (b) Fireflies, 1934, 41 x 25.5 cm, aggv 3 Urushibara Mokuchu, 1889- , (medium: woodblock), made manyJapan- ese-style prints during his stay of 30 years in London and Paris. He came to London in 1910 with the Anglo-Japanese Exhibition, as a skilled demonstrator of wood�engraving and printing. His studies of flowers were among the most popular of his prints. Cyclamen, n.d., 30 x 20 cm, Collection of Mr. Arthur Menzies 4 Hiratsuka Unichi, 1895- , (medium: woodblock), is respected as one of the pioneers of the modern print movement in Japan, and is known for his restrained, simple ink monochromes. His favourite subjects were famous temples and gardens. Byodo-ln Lakeside, 1962, 43.3 x 28.6 cm, aggv 5 Onchi Koshiro, 1891 -1955 (medium: woodblock), a leader of the modern Japanese print movement, was continually at the forefront in new developments in art. His prints display no national identity and at first glance can pass as European. He was gifted in portraiture, but preferred abstraction. (a) Zoo In Early Fall, n.d., 18 x 24 cm, aggv (b) Portraiture of the PoetHaglwara Sakutaro (printed by Hirai Koichi in 1955 from the original 1943 blocks), 55 x 43.8 cm, aggv 6 Maekawa Sempan, 1888-1960 (medium: woodblock), a self-taught artist, preferred to depict scenes of the ordinary people of Japan.
