Maligne Lake. July 26/44 [1942]
Saw 4 bull elk
5 moose
4 deer
1 coyote
Climbed to the summit N [North] of the
cabin + from there could see dawn
a long barren valley to the
head of Helmet creek + to the
mountains bordering the Rocky.
Found microtines of several different
species abundant here. So far in
36 trap nights have taken
Microtus longicaudus [underlined] 5. M. [Microtus] p. [pennsylvanicus] drumondi [underlined]
15, Clethrionomys - 5, Phenacomys
1, Sorex 1, Peromyscus 1 = 28.
Also found a colony of microtus
at timberline + in it shot a
juv [juvenile] M. [Microtus] longicaudus. This colony
was eating grass, Mt. [Mountain] sorrel +
Salix arctica.
