In evening rain went mossing with Wilf [Schofield],
trying to keep a few genera straight
May 13 [1961]
Drove east as far as the Skeena R. [River] stopping
here + there collecting inverts [invertebrates]. Generally they
were scarce. Made another valliant [valiant] effort
after Blue Grouse; got some exercise + mosquito
bites. Wilf having good luck but not finding
anything surprising - nor anything to disrupt our
Q.C.I. [Queen Charlotte Islands] theories.
Wilf [Schofield] sleeping under picnic shelter
at Kloiya Bay - we in Land Rover nearby.
Raining much of time but comfortable in
our campsite.
May 14
Worked towards town. Had success
finding snails + small slugs under boards.
Generally these beasties are very rare.
Golden-crowned sparrows, becoming numerous
last few days, apparently cleared out in
morning.
Masses of people around campsite on this
sunny Sunday afternoon - mostly boystrous [boisterous]
Italians. On leaving they offered us some
Elderberry wine (uggh)
May 15 [1961]
Usual seemingly endless series of delays consistent
with dealing with Northland navigation; Left
about 11 pm (12 hours late) after wasting a
glorious day in Rupert.
May 16.
Arrived Sandspit after breakfast. Saw
Doug McIntyre. Sockeye now going up Culper
and Yakoun. Chuck Owen at Crown Zellerbach
trapped about 45 marten + 10 otter last winter
Tried seeing him but at work; wife relayed
message that we would be very interested
in any future or old skulls.
Checked a Cuvier whale by airsock.
204" long - complete, 3 months old but
still stinking badly. - goo running out
of skull. With some trouble detached
skull and hid it under sand and logs
to be checked up on in a few months.
Disembarked at Skidgate [Skidegate] + met
old friends - Kendal, Serges DeBucy, Don
Crosby, Orvil, etc [etcetera]. Camped next to
forestry garage.
May 17
Another perfect day. Loaded boat +
pushed off to west coast to show Wilf [Schofield]
