  • Canis latrans Cairn Pass. July 12/44. [1944] Watched two coyote running side by side down this small creek. They appeared to be hunting whistlers, of which there were numbers. Both animals were predominantly in summer [word crossed out] winter pelage. Cairn Pass. July 14/44. [1944] Saw three coyotes hunting the floor of the 2nd valley north. They moved in leisurely fashion in an almost parallel course 50 to 100 yards apart. They didn't seem to be very hungry + gave the impression of having nothing in particular to do. Shot one of them, an adult [male symbol] Wt [weight] 25 lbs [pounds]. Stomach contents 1 Peromyscus [underlined] + the rest remains of the legs of an ungulate - calf moose? or ad [adult] elk?. Rocky Forks July 19/44. [1944] Saw one + heard another in the burn just below Southesk Pass. Maligne Lake. July 26/44 [1944] Saw a coyote in the timberline basin N [north] of the cabin.
