- July 11/65. [1965] Kwakshua, Calvert Island.
Anchored here last evening + today
explored the west beach in the early morning
Saw 2 otters a [female symbol] + 1 yng [young].
No sign of racoons
Many mink tracks on every beach.
dead shrew + Peromyscus.
deer + wolf tracks.
Birds:- Osprey
Eagles
Winter Wren
Western Flycatcher
Hairy Woodpecker
Hermit Thrush + Russet backed [thrush].
Junco (1 yng [young] on net top)
Blue Grouse
Least Sandpipers.
In late morning when round to telephone to
repeater station + was driven to top of mt [mountain] on
terrible road. Flora most interesting.
Loiseleuria, Vaccinium sp. [species], Jack pine, common
Juniper, Eriogonum, Caltha, Habenaria,
a variety of sedges + grasses, Mt [mountain] Hemlock,
Yellow cedar etc. Miles of alpine tundra
were accessible.
Other repeaters are on Swindle + Tuck
Islands.
In PM [evening] sailed over to Penrose Island at
entrance to Rivers Inlet.
