Dec. [December] 22 Viewed calf elk killed by wolves
on ice at edge of lake [illegible word] about
Dec. [December] 12. F. [Frank] Bryant saw tracks
of 5 wolves on Dec. [December] 17 at
carcass and stated wolves
had eaten from carcass on that
date. Had not been around
since. Calf was about 3/4
consumed.
Dec. [December] 26. Fresh tracks of 3 wolves across
road at west end of Pyramid
Lake. Followed them across
lake and into swamp. About
600 yds [yards] from lake shore two
gray wolves trotted slowly
up from carcass into timber.
One started for Pal (dog) but
saw us and disappeared. Soon
started barking and howling.
Found carcass of 3 yr [year] old
bull elk at least 3/4 consumed.
Had been killed on Dec. [December] 24
(+ or - 12 hrs. [hours]). Backtracked
the kill as follows: wolves
jumped elk in center of swamp.
He made for hills but wolves
first drew blood about 20
ft [feet] after jumping him.
