deer. Thus the population per
sq. [square] mile of this territory is
about 22.
Proportions of sexes In this days work saw
3 undoubted bucks all 3 pts. [points] or
better, one questioned buck
and 8 does. On way home
saw 1 doe + 1 spike buck.
Sooke Hills. 4 yrs [years] notes by P.W. [Patrick Waldyve] Martin + self.
7 bucks + 19 does seen.
Barked trees. [underlined]
Saw 2 small Douglas firs
barked by antler rubbing.
Breeding. [underlined]
The spike buck seen was
definitely following the doe but
was not running her. He
was seen to rub the root
of her tail with his chin
+ make as if to mount.
2 of the big bucks seen were
by themselves the 3rd [third] was with
a doe, which followed him as he ran off.
