Ecology of hibernation

Dr Oka has demonstrated
that [illegible word] tissue will stimulate
limb induction in urodela +
vice versa. Cannot discover a
chemical induction + feels that it
must be living organic material.
He is thinking also that perhaps it
has the nature of an antibody
reaction.
Dr. Shimoizumi is studying
hibernation in the Dormouse
He identifies 3 types of hibernation
1 Bear type. Do not cool down
2. Bat type cool to close to freezing
but warm up when stimulated
3. Frog type - do not warm up.
In dormouse above 26 [degree symbol] C [celsius] temps [temperatures] the
same asleep or awake. 22 quite
fluctuating, 18 [degree symbol] temp [temperature] drops to
environmental temp [temperature] while asleep
He finds that in this animal
cold alone will induce hibernation.
In other species it can be food.
He thinks aestivation + hibernation
are biologically different.
This is an excellent dept. [department]

Had lunch at the Embassy with

In afternoon visited the
whales research Institute where
