- 11 Pilgrim Bottle
Ming dynasty; mid to late 16th century
h. 16.5 cm; The Reid Collecion
The shape of this flask is based on ancient
water containers brought to China by trav-
ellers from Parthian Persia. This bottle has
lobed handles and a flattened round form.
The central motif on both sides is a thread-
like dragon surrounded by lotus scrolls. The
colours include: red, white, yellow, cobalt
blue, dark green, brown, and mixed yellow-
green and red-white, on a bright blue
ground.
12 Circular Box
Ming dynasty; late 16 th/early 17th century
d 15.7 cm; The Reid Collection
This covered box is rather unique in that
both the lid and the base are attractively
decorated in totally different styles and
colour schemes. The lid has a design of
two flying cranes amidst multi-coloured
clouds in a light blue sky, while the base is
decorated with beautiful peonies. The sides
of the box have simple floral designs. The
colours include: red, white, yellow, deep
green, light blue, cobalt blue, transparent
purple, and several mixed colours.
