- Mammals (cont'd [continued])
14 Columbian ground squirrel - exceedingly
common; occasionally observed 10-12 feet up
tamarack trees [Larix larcina - aka black/red/eastern/American larch].
At least 3 albinos seen; 1 collected by Hardy; other
photographed. Some seen in 1918 by Ed Barbour
+ a few seen off + on since that time.
15 Mantled [golden-mantled] ground squirrel - 1 collected.
- one or two others seen.- many seen in 1943
by W.B. Johnston.
16 Ground hog - Hoary marmot; colony of
several dozen direct opposite mine buildings.
One large individual with piercing whistle; most
are juveniles. Mr Johnston shot 2 of latter but lost
them down the burrows. on Aug [August] 26. On 28 one dead
one was found on top of boulder - throat eaten away.
One med. [medium] [female symbol] taken on Aug [August] 29
Red squirrel - common in tree area
17 Chipmunk - common about mine buildings +
elsewhere. - very pale in colour; remarked upon by
Allan Brooks who says they may [word addded as postcript] be undescribed race.
