  • Cervus canadensis Jasper, Alta. [Alberta] May 3, 1945 Ed MacDonald [Edward McDonald] reports that 2 bulls wintered near Maligne Lake cabin this year. Other elk were starting to work up toward Medicine on May 1. Saw 2 cows at Pocohontas today. " May 4, 1945 On Buffalo Prairie saw. 6 bulls + 3 cows. 14 cows + 1 calf of last year at Mile 28 S. [south] saw 2 cows. Frank Wells states that he found calves in almost all the dry cow elk killed but that most of those recently nursing were not pregnant. States he once chased a Lynx off a young elk calf it had just killed. Jasper. May 6/45 [1945] After mid winter many elk seemed to move out of the park into B.C. [British Columbia] from the Decoigne area. Kills:- Examined one animal that died late last summer from a fall into a rock cut. Bert White believes wolves were responsible Numbers:- Last night white counted 10 cows with 2 yearling calves.
