- Temperature 84 [degree symbol]
11:15. Heard noise 25 yards ahead, saw
legs of deer below a fallen log +
ears of another, neither were aware
of me. Sat down in full view
on black stump. Old buck
with big antlers that I had
not seen ran off over hill
40 yards above me. Other deer
apparently not alarmed by
flight of buck. Approached
to within 10 yards of log pile
under which deer were bedded.
Fawn broke + took six or
seven long jumps downhill
dodged behind small stump
+ did not reappear. Doe stood
up in bed, I freeze + doe walks
a few steps nearer, ears up;
Horseflies. [underlined] Tabanids bothering her a lot,
head, hears + tail constantly in
motion but feet of her ad [adult]
others seen today not stomped
except very occassionally [occasionally]. Stable
flies seem to produce this
reaction more. After 10 minutes
of watching me moving a
few yards laterally + back she
slowly + with stilted gait
walks in direction of fawn
which is nowhere to be seen.
+ then taking + occassional [occasional]
