- Victoria, B.C. [British Columbia] July 28, 1939.
The doe with the fawn is
in summer coat with a few
bleached hairs of the winter
still clinging to her flanks.
She still spends the day apart
from the fawn. I watched
the 3 deer for about half
an hour this evening.
The fawn made no effort
to suckle, ate grass + oak leaves
avidly. The buck dominated
the doe + drove her from the
food. The fawn, in the presence
of the buck kept close to its
mother but did not appear to
be afraid of the [male symbol]. The buck
licked the fawn for several
seconds.
In eating oak leaves the
[female symbol] + [male symbol] used the front teeth to
pluck them, the fawn used its
side teeth entirely.
