- Foreword
The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria is extremely fortunate to have been gifted such a large and impressive collection of Chinese ivory carvings from the late Francis and Kay Reif. This collection of Ming and Qing period ivories is one of the finest in the world and several works of art are well known and published in early writings on Chinese ivory. We are indeed indebted to Mr. and Mrs. Reif for the building of this stunning collection and for entrusting the AGGV with these outstanding treasures. This collection nicely complements the AGGVs collection of 19th century Chinese ivories largely donated by the late Mrs. Nancy Simpson.
We are grateful to several people and organizations for the success of this project. We thank the Department of Canadian Heritage and its Museum Assistance Program for the financial support of this exhibition. The Art Gallery of Greater Victorias Volunteer Committee, the British Columbia Arts Council and the Inter-municipal Committee - Saanich, Victoria, Oak Bay, Esquimalt who have all contributed financial support, which has enabled the AGGV to undertake this special project. Can West Mall has also contributed funds to the production of the exhibition catalogue. We thank them for their continued support of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.
I would like to thank and congratulate Barry Till, Curator of Asian Art, for the professionalism evident in this project. It is thanks to his attentive stewardship that the AGGVs collection of Asian Art continues to improve and grow. Special thanks are due to Mary-ellen Threadkell, Ann Tighe, and Chris Russell for installation and organization of its national tour.
