Banff, Alta. [Alberta] June 3/43 [1943]
Fawns:- Saw a cow with a very young calf
22 miles W. [west] of Banff in the jack pine
thickets. THe little fellows legs wobbled
as he trotted after his mother.
Home Range:- The cow + yearling at the E. [east] end
of Vermillion [Vermilion] Lake is still there. The two
were feeding on the short new growth
far out on the mudflat. This is now
over a month since I first saw them
in this spot.
Wintering:- On Boom Creek were signs to
indicate that about 3 or 4 moose had
spent part of the winter there. Betula font. [fontinalis]
+ a dwarf species of willow + balsam
tips seems to have constituted their
food. Balsams heavily browsed in places.
Banff. Alta. [Alberta] June 8/43 [1943]
census:- On drive from Banff to 103 mile
on Jasper Highway I saw 20 moose of
which 4 [female symbol], 4 [male symbol] + 2 yearlings.
Moult:- In progress on all except the
young stock. 1 old bull was almost
completely in summer pelage. The
old [female symbol] shot had patches of winter hair
+ thin patches naked.
