  • Journal May 6/44 [1944] Range:- The sheep range across the river from Henry House flats is terribly cut up + overgrazed. Worst damage to the flatter areas east of Talbot Lake is by Horses. Braznet estimates at least 120 possibly 140 head there almost all year round now. Situation is now critical + those horses should be removed. Counted 19 horses on Henry House flats. On this basis the 86 elk seen the other night represented 19/8 x 86 = 204 elk. I today counted east of Snaring 20 head of horses including 9 on the north side of the river. This is on the range reputed to carry 120 to 140 head of horses. Just this side of Henry house the elk have killed or partly killed much of the Shepherdia as well as all the young aspens. Noted that the sites of former aspens cut by beaver at Talbot Lake are now marked by little heaps of earth containing rotten wood. A low dam across the Athabasca to keep Jasper Lake flooded would be good for the entire valley.
