- Cowichan Lake. Jan. [January] 31/40 [1940].
Food. Buck shot had.
35% fir.
30% salal
35% Hieracium.
Saw fawn eat salal 5 minutes.
doe eat arbutus 2 minutes.
doe eat lichen form rocks 2 min. [minutes]
but by far the majority of the
time feeding - several hours
in deer minutes was spent
ground feeding on Hieracium [underlined]
, to a slight extent on fresh
thistle shoots + once in a while
on grass.
It seems possible that the
bulk diet of food [word crossed out] fir + salal
was taken at night + the
ground stuff that required
hunting was eaten in the
day time. This is a criticism of the deer minute
method of recording food preferences
Fir + arbutus browsed up
to 45-48 inches from the
ground.
Photos Spirea bush browsed on
uphill side on steep slope.
Fir injured by browsing +
horning.
The thorny gooseberry is
also [word crossed out] untouched, the rose + black raspberry
only have the leaves + very tender
