- Sealion. We managed to chop off its
head + carried it away hanging on a
stick between us. About 8 eagles in
the Bay, all adult but one. Also a
sharp shin hawk + a curlew. Weather
cleared + beach certainly surpassed Palm
beach in beauty.
Back across the trail northwards,
collecting mosses for Wilf [Schofield] on the way.
Struggled with the boat over the tide flats
+ returned to camp. Found 2 shrews in
traps in Henslung bay - certainly small.
Heavy rain in evening.

all the partly exposed rocks in Bay north.

few glass balls + the remains of a large

forest all the way. Another collection of moss.
At lake collected amphipods, worms
and planarians
Returned to Henslung. Hiked over to west
falcon-eagle eyrie, setting about 70 traps
en route. Last yrs. [years] falcon ne [word crossed out] site not occupied
but birds still about. Eagles nest occupied
again. Discouraged Mike [Bigg] from climbing to
it.
At dusk the "Western Trader" - a
Nanaimo Fisheries Salmon tagging vessel
came in. Chris Turner, O.I.C. [Officer In Charge] offered to
drop us off at Frederick en route to
seigning 50 miles off Hippa I. [Island] Made scramble
to get organized for 4 am. pushoff. Had
to leave traps in woods but still have >120
to take.
Tonight was the first major night of
Murrelet hatch. Adults sounding a bit like
budgie - barn swallows's twittering. Occasional
strident peep of some struggling young-
ster.
