Series: Forty-eight Views of Famous Places of Edo, Woodblock print
The Yoshiwara was the red-light district of the city of Edo. The old Yoshiwara district burned down in the Meireki fire of 1657. It was rebuilt at a new location and renamed Shin-Yoshiwara or New Yoshiwara. Often, young girls were sold to the brothels by their impoverished parents.

Surawaka-cho was the licensed Kabuki theatre area of Edo. The foreground of this scene shows a street filled with many placards advertising the plays and the actors.

The Ryogoku Bridge was the oldest and one of the busiest bridges across the Sumida River. It was renowned for its recreation and entertainment as it featured many teahouses, theatres and tea stalls, seen in the foreground of this print.
