[Creek] (cont'd [continued]) June 24/43 [1943] In general it can be said that in the spruce forest winter habitat of the moose the vegetation is browsed up to or slightly beyond the safe limit but that in as much as elk + deer largely leave the park in winter the range here is primarily summer + as there is ample summer feed for all game now in the park the forage conditions for all save moose are excellent " June 25/43 [1943] Today hiked about 8-9 miles up Tokkum Creek. The country along the river is an open spruce forest of climax type with some young balsams coming up along with the spruce reproduction. The valley is narrow with steep sides featuring an almost continuous series of slides Those facing west are reproducing in balsam with some spruce. Those directed eastward have balsam + spruce along the river with dwarf willows of 3 or 4 varieties including 2 small leaved ones, the long catkinned willow + the shepherdia leaved willow (see specimens) from Shadow Lake + V.C. [Vermilion Creek] Then up the slide come willows of a taller
