  • Alces. [underlined] Cairn Cabin. Aug [August] 3/43 [1943] Range:- Shed antlers all over the Cairn Creek valley + up the subsidiary valleys toward Mt. [mount] Southesk indicate a good winter population of moose bulls. Willows dead to 18" [inches] or 2 ft [feet]. Census 2 [female symbol]'s, 1 [male symbol] within 2 miles of cabin. Rocky Forks. Aug [August] 6/43 [1943] Saw a cow at the lick here + another cow at the cabin. Antlers around the cabin indicate wintering. But saw little sign of wintering above the old cabin. Jacques Lake. Aug. [August] 7/43 [1943] Apparently a fair winter pop. [population] of moose along the Rocky + a small one - say 3 or 4 indiv. [individuals] up Jacques Creek. Kills:- 1 [female symbol] + 2 [male symbol]'s all 2 or 3 years ago. [male symbol]'s with antlers on. Predation:- [Warden Edward] Macdonald reports 2 moose with locked antlers near Jacques Lake killed by grizzly. Skulls seen by me Aug [August] 8/43 [1943] Jasper. Aug [August] 8/43 [1943] Saw 3 bulls high up on a slide above Beaver Lake.
