  • Rangifer Blue Creek. May 26/44. [1944] Saw 2 bulls in open meadows east of Deer Creek. Topaz Shelter. May 29/44 [1944] Great quantities of caribou droppings every- where along the valley above the canyon + fresh tracks on the trail. Saw 5 caribou 1 [male symbol] + 2 ad [adult] [female symbol]. 2? Antlers:- One of the [female symbol]'s still carried one antler Feeding:- All were feeding out in the flats + eating grass or some other ground vegetation. Topaz May 30/44. [1944] The two caribou feeding below camp on the open meadow proved to be the 1 horned cow + antlerless bull seen further down the valley the day we came in. Winter food: Lichens:- Stereocaulon tomentosum Fr., Cladonia gracilis [illegible word] C. uniciales Ach [Cladonia uncialis] Food:- These two were eating grass - Jasper. June 28/44 [1944] On the basin between Signal + Tekarra saw 4 bull caribou 1 ad [adult] cow + 1 yearling cow. All were pale but the young cow was palest - almost dark gray. All seemed in good condition. The 8 antlers found would indicate that the area is a winter range Noted a species of Juncus [underlined] heavily winter browsed. Juncus drummondii [illegible word]
