May 6
A bright, clear, day but took awhile getting
under way. Delay after day until finally pushed
off in boat at noon. Bright sunny day + we felt
lucky not to be office bound.
Past Tugwell I. [Island] to Lucy I. [Island] + lighthouse.
Tal'd [tallied] Rhino. [Rhinoceros] Auklets back but we did a lot of
digging in their maze of tunnels without
success. Felt it would be useless setting traps
here so headed south to Rachael I [Islands]. Evidence
of some hole nests here too so set two coni-
bears. Each set 54 traps for mice (110)
Had beautiful little harbour with some small
swimming snails in water.
West [word crossed out] East towards Kinahan I. [Islands], Conora boat
plaining [planing] well but engine trouble with dirt in gas.
Running before the strong wind we soon reached
West Kinahan I. [Island] + set 120 traps. Little sign of
burrowing birds: only MIKE [Bigg] saw some.
Headed back to port + ramped by green
elevator.
May 7. Sunday.
Breakfast of pancakes + away by
9:15. At W. [West] Kinahan I. [Island], found only 3 shrews
(all skinned). Rather surprising: seemed
that there might be more around.
Nil at Rachael I [Islands]. Got a wetting on
the rough road home. Sea water ice [underlined] cold
Found one grass covered eagles nest on
Rachael I. [Islands], 50' up dead stub. Saw about 7
doz. [dozen] eagles in morning; mostly adults
Skinned by elevator, Mike [Bigg] doing good job on his
