Food:- 100 minutes on grass.
The broken + partially timbered country
in which the sheep are living on
Buffalo Prairie favors predator
activity. Wolves, coyote, Mt [Mountain] lion
+ bear are all present in fair
numbers. Wells found an adult ram killed
by wolves in November while crossing to the Astoria side
Jasper, Alta [Alberta] Dec. [December] 23/44 [1944]
Found the mummified remains of a
ewe dead since last may or
June. With her were the remains
of an unborn lamb with
teeth erupted to the point that
they are at birth. This animal
was opened + one fore leg + the skull were
missing but the damage looked
like the work of an eagle
rather than a coyote. The rest
of the animal was untouched.
The remains suggest that this ewe
may have died while lambing.
Wells reports seeing 35 sheep on
the hill above his place one time
this fall. They seemed to be
moving north + he thinks they
may have been heading for
Buffalo Prairie. This seems quite
probable. He also tells me of
starting a bunch away above timberline
adjoining the Astoria in midwinter
