- Bald Mt. [Mountain] Aug [August] 26, 1939
5:20 AM. - Temp. [Temperature] 49 [degree symbol], overcast with clouds
at about 2500', slight dew, very
light SE [southeast] wind freshening during
morning to a strong SE [southeast] by E [east] wind
at noon. Clear sky with bright
moon until midnight. Cleared
off by 9 A.M. with bright sun
rest of day. Relative humidity
has been regularly near saturation
at night, down to about 20% in
the mid day hours.
5:30: AM. approached to within 15 yards
of an 18 mos [months] doe as she foraged
slowly up a draw angling past
me. Her head was seldom above
the horizontal, generally low.
She did not once stop to gaze
purposefully. In 25 minutes grazed
slowly up a knoll for 20-25 yards
+ as she came level with the top
raised her head + with ears at the
alert + thrown forward looked
intently over the rim for 35 sec. [seconds]
fed on rose bush for 15 sec [seconds], looked
for 15 sec [seconds], then with ears dropped
to grazing position slowly scratched
her chin + muzzle on a twig, then
over the hill out of sight.
I stalked over the hill + found
her still feeding 25-30 yards away.
