- Enhydra Lutris
Asilomar, Monterey Co. [County], Calif. [California] Aug [August] 2 + 3/74 [1974]
Watched a young sea otter feeding
in about 8 +/- feet of water for more than
an hour. At times it was within
50 ft [feet] of me + its actions quite visible.
It dived repeatedly coming up on its
back with a stone - I think the same
stone in place on its abdomen. It
beat its food item, holding it with both
front feet, straight arm, with a
steady rythm [rhythm] of 1/sec [second]. The blows
were quite audible 200 +/- feet away
despite some more noise.
I returned at low tide to pick up
pieces of food residue + found fragments
of Tegula brunnea + Tegula funebralis
in equal numbers plus one Cancer
antennarious of about 8 cm [centimetres] width.
Next day timed the dive of a larger otter
Submergence times in succession dives were
in seconds: 52, 52, 45, 15, 50, 40, 08,
64, 50, 68, 40, 52, 25. Whatever it
was getting was soft + was eaten without
hammering. After many of the dives I
detected no eating.
