- I examined the type of Ovis californiana [underlined].
It consists of the two horn sheaths mounted in
cow position on a wooden base. It is useless
systematically.
I gather that the whole outfit is much the
same - avoiding coming to grips with the
real subject matter of variation either
because of insufficient background or distaste
for detailed analytical work + covering their
neglect by describing Taxonomy as an art not a
science. Admitting that there must be an
element of induction in the final decision one
must none the less completely exhaust the
possibilities of the scientific process in studying
the data in order to provide the firmest
possible basis for the induction. This seems
a foreign philosophy to these men + I understand
now the sterility that has been the lot
of the vertebrate Department here for so
many years. Their heyday was the late 1800's
when the magnificent art [underlined] monographs
of [Henry] Seebohm, Sclater [?], [John] Gould, [John Everett] Millais +
Lydikker [Richard Lydekker] were being produced. They have
progressed little since.

tried the above on him. Was interested to find
that he agreed + that he brought [A.J.] Toynbee into
the group of those inclined to let their interpretation
