- May 20/41 [1941] Hedley to Osoyoos
Up at 5:30. Ian [McTaggart Cowan] finished making skins of
birds taken day before. Collected two
kingbirds before leaving about 8 A.M.
East of Keremeos Ian [McTaggart Cowan] collected 5 lark-
sparrows in open sage brush land. Birds
were calling Heeoh! heeoh! Toodle-OO!
and mating. Meadow larks also present.
Further along road collected Clark's Crow
and caught downy young of Kildeer [killdeer] on
road. Took photographs (colour) before
killing bird. Saw Orioles, Red wings,
Quail (natural immigrant) Heard pheasant,
Tanagers, Pee Wee, Warblers, Raven.
Saw: Lewis woodpecker, Magpie, Kingbirds, Mourning Doves
In pond at top of Richter Pass (4800' [feet elevation])
collected Ambystoma larvae (macrodactylum?)
+ Hyla tadpoles.
Stopped at Spotted Lake on way down
and collected Phyllopods. Water level much
higher than when seen in May 1936. Fairy shrimps
quite numerous along edge particularly where scum
of algae collects. Brown streak of eggs above
edge of water. Took color pictures, close up +
also of lake. Also pictures of lake with big camera
Ian [McTaggart Cowan] got 2 Western [word crossed out] Northern Phalarope in lake. (4 seen)
Set up camp in cottonwood copse across lake
from Osoyoos. Swim + supper
Set out 29 mouse traps. At night fall heard
Spadefoots + Hyla along lake edge. Collected 5 Spadefoots +
1 Perognathus on road.
