- 107 Plaque of Vishnu (Nepalese)
late 18th/early 19th century
brass, copper, gilt, inlay of turquoise,
coral and other precious stones, 35.4 x 30 cm
Private Collection
This spectacular jewelled plaque shows Vishnu, the Protector and Preserver, in the centre. Vishnu, one of the three supreme Hindu gods, corresponds to the Buddha, who is often worshipped in Nepal as a manifestation of Vishnu.
Although the subject of this plaque is Hindu, it is an important example of the high craftsmanship of the Newari metalworkers of Nepal, who also produced a great many similar Buddhist works for the Tibetans.
