- Aug [August] 27 [1943] Forbidden Plateau.
Heavy mist all day. I circled
the lake in the afternoon to try and
get a red Squirrel or nuthatch but
saw nothing tho [though] I heard Nuthatches
+ Chickadee twice and also a red
squirrel. Southwest of camp I came
onto two deer and approached within
about 50 feet of them before they
ran. They had been bedded down,
the ground still warm from where
they had been lying.
Aug [August] 28 [1943] Drenching rain. Shot a siskin from
atop a tall hemlock. One of a flock
of about 15 birds. The inevitable
Jays about Camp but that was all.
Aug. [August] 29. [1943] Cleared overnight with a terrific gale
and blew almost all day. Visibility
was limitless, the mainland mountains
being perfectly clean.
A trip around the lake in the forenoon[?]
for specimens yielded nothing. Some baby
Juncos just out of the nest were seen,
and two Band Tailed Pigeons.
Later in the day with Cliff + Mrs Carl
to Panther Lake Again very little seen
A large hawk, looked almost as big as
an Eagle and showed considerable lightish[?]
on the nape[?] and head of the
