  • Aug [August] 25 - 43 [1943] Forbidden Plateau. (cont [continued]). The duck turns out to be an American Goldeneye probably an immature bird, possibly a female. Another Pigeon seen this morning. En route to Cruckshank Canyon and back life of any kind was remarkable for its absence. THis is about a secen or eight mile trip through country that looks as though it should teem with life. We saw nothing at all going in. Heard some chickadees + nuthatches. Coming back saw a Shark Shinned Hawk and three more American Goldeneyes on lower Lake Beautiful. Shot a Golden Crowned Kinglet. Dr. Carl saw Blue grouse + I heard some hooting. This last seems stange so late in the season. Eight geese (unidentified) were seen on Wood Lake by Dr Carl. Also some waders (Spotted Sanpiper?) on Upper Lake Beautiful. Heron also reported[?] by M. Clarke. [Lewis J. Clark] Aug. [August] 26 - 43 [1943] Forbidden Plateau. The usual ravens about in the early morning, and the Oregon Jays. At about 8:15. Dr Carl was over to look at traps and told me a small hawk was after the Jays. over by the Stables. It turned out to be a Black Merlin but I missed the shot at it.
