  • Alberni Trip - June 21-23/41 [1941] June 21/41 [1941] Left Victoria 9 A.M. for Alberni stopping at Pritchards in Nanaimo for lunch. Arrived Alberni 4 P.M. + made arrangements with Game Warden Jim Dewar to go to Stamp Falls on the morrow to collect lampreys. Showers changing to steady rain. [June] 22 [1941] Met Dewar at 9 A.M. + drove to Stamp Falls where we met Bob McQuorrid, Dom. [Dominion] Fisheries Guardian who has been stationed at this place for 14 seasons. In spite of high water and early season several dozen lampreys were collected from one pool near the bottom of the fish ladder. According to McQuorrid, the lampreys school up into a large squirming mass consisting of many dozens of individuals, usually in the slack water below a fall. When the water level is lower, and usually in early July, lampreys are very numerous in the fish ladder, some of very large size. Sockeye were ascending the ladder in fair numbers; to date the run has been the largest in 14 years according to McQuorrid. Sockeye start in April, some ripe in June. Springs + Cohos in August; season ends in November.
