M. Langley, ESQ. Chief of Police. Victoria B.C. Dear Sir: Yours of the 15th instant, accompanies by the photographs of Simmons and Tracy, alias Johnson, just at hand and contents noted. In reply will give you all our records show in the case. Fred Simmons is unknown to us here. Charles Tracy alias Johnson, has the following record with us: True name Charles Angelo, has gone under the alias of Charles Johnson, and Frank Wilson in this State. His Father was a Customs Officer at Victoria B.C. some forty years ago, and we understand Charles was born up there. Sep.10th 1875. Sent to the Undustrial School from here, for House-breaking, under his true name. Dec.19th 1876. Sent to County Jail here, for nine months, on two charges of Petit Larceny, under true name. Feb.2nd 1878. Sent to House of Correction here, for two years, Burglary 2nd degree, under true name. June 11th 1880. Sent to State Prison from Alameda County, Cal. for one year, Burglary 2nd degree, under true name. July 23rd 1881. Arrested here for the Burglary of Manning's Jewelry Store in Virginia City Nev. and about $2000.00 worth of the stolen goods recovered in this City, the balance of $5000.00 worth was found there. Angelo was returned to Virginia City Aug. 31st 1881, and sentenced to seven years in the Nevada State Prison. Subsequently receiving an additional four years for attempting to escape from that Prison. July 14th 1893. Sent to the County Jail here, for 3 months, Having Burglars Tools in possession, under true name. July 22nd 1893. Sent to State Prison from here, for five years, Burglary under true name. Discharged from there Feb. 28th 1897. Kindly let us know the final disposition made of him, for the crime you now hold him under, and greatly oblige, Yours very truly, Geo. W. Wittman.
