Oyster River
May 20, 19542.
With Rex Hayes counted the pellet
groups on the 7 permanent
plots on Sayward Forest. Results
#1-90; #2-12; #3-22; #4-194;
#5-22; #6-46; #7-36.
May 21, 1952.
Counted the Greenstone plot #4
above and then examined the
winter range W. [west] of the Greenstone
Although there was a heavy
concentration of pellet groups the
range was not over used. In
my estimation it was about at
a safe level of stocking with
huckleberry used about 50%, cedar
about the same + fir not at all.
Salal was used heavily in a few
places, elsewhere in winter range
hardly touched.

Spent the day in at Quinsam
Cabin with [James] Bendell. I was much
taken with the precision + purposefulness
of his field operations. His routine
examination of a grouse consisted of
plucking a few feathers from rt [right] leg
, exposing tarsus + puncturing metatarsal
vein for blood smear. Remove
