were either in the bank, in
the open field or under
low bushes. Many of the ones
in the open had no earth
piles in front of them. The
vegetation, besides grass, was
chiefly birch + berry scrub
with a good deal of poison ivy
in places. Took 5 groundhogs
in a disused quarry where
they lived in amongst the
rocks in association with
pack rats, 1 squirrel +
White-footed mice. I saw
the squirrel come down over
the edge of the quarry, after
dark, + enter a crevice in
the rocks, it did not come
out again in the 1/2 hr [hour] I
spent there. The 10 pack rats
I took were 3 half grown
young + 7 adults. They had
made large piles of sticks
+ rubbish under the
big rocks. I saw a white
