July 15. Still cool with low overcast but no
wind + calm seas. Spotted our first fulmar
today late in the afternoon, position probably
75 miles east of 56 [degree symbol] 01' N [north], 33 [degree symbol] 45' W [west].
There was a dance this evening that Joyce [Cowan]
+ I attended - we had good fun adjusting
ourselves to the slight roll.
On board are a very nice couple the
Brodies from Indiana with their 2
daughters of 13 + 10. He is Professor of
Botany there with mycology (systematic) his
chief joy in life. He has just been offered
an appointment as head in Toronto + is
seriously considering. Would prefer a place
in B.C. [British Columbia] His wife is an accomplished
pianist.
July 16. This morning there were 2 fulmars on
our track at about 20 [degree symbol] 46' W [west]. By noon the
number had grown to 12-15, all in white
plumage. 300 miles off shore other birds
started to appear 1 gannett [gannet], 1 parasitic jaeger,
2 kittiwakes + a herring gull.
July 17. The big day dawned dull + scattered rain
squalls plagued us. Sighted the tip of
Ireland at 10:30. At 7 fulmars + kittiwakes
were with us but other species appeared
almost as we sighted land. A gull train
appeared at once, also saw a razor bill
