Attended lecture by Critch [Francis Crick] of Cavendish
Laboratory on the structure of nucleic acid + the
influence upon the theory of the reproduction
of chromosomes. He did a most interesting job
of interpreting the data known about the dextral
form. + concluded that it is a double spiral
with the two "strands" in reversed direction
the bases adenine, guanine, Tyrpine [thymine] + one other
are in balanced pairs. His paper in collaboration
with D.S. [James Dewey] Watson should be a most interesting
piece of work.

Addressed about 200 at the Perth scout leaders
convention at Dalguise House, Dunkeld - a very alert audience. Later
drove with Molly to Glendoick to meet E.H. Cox,
a most interesting + knowledgeable chap with
a great knowledge of rhododendrons. + a
very fine collection of them. He operates a
commercial garden. Grows lettuce for the market
+ immediately plants leeks, all the brassicas + a
