- At the museum I met Dr
Wolff - the crustaceologist +
left word for [Magnus] Degerbol that
I would be in at 2 tomorrow.
Spent the rest of the morning
shopping + had lunch at Lodi
on the main square.
Afterwards took bus no [number] 41
to the zoo. Found it to be
as good as I remembered except
that the penguins were in poor
shape. 4 kings just starting
to moult + very brown + faded
6 or 8 Humboldts also faded -
no young.
The shorebirds are excellent
Ruddy turnstone, Dunlin, ruff, stilts
avocets, ringed plover, pewits,
curlew, knots etc. all very healthy
Zebra, Ankole cattle, bison,
buffalo, several apes, 4 yng [young]
reindeer, red deer, fallow and
bushbuck, sheep all were breeding successfully
I was amazed to see the
snowy owl with 4 young
Herring gulls also had nests.
Calif [California] Quail + Coturnicops had
chicks. The aviaries were
magnificent, newer birds bldgs [buildings]
2 baly [bali] tigers + a lion.
The fallows, red + reindeer
had antlers still in the
whet, the Axis buck had
his stripped + mature.
The 4 polar bears, 2
browns + a panda were
in really magnificent rock-
girt[?] pens + were in wonderful
condition. A yearling
walrus also looked fat +
happy. Patagonian hares +
capybaras made a good
exhibit.
A feature of this zoo is
that almost none of the
pens in this zoo are at the
level of the viewer. They are
either higher or sunk below.
Dinner at the Hotel + early to
bed - we were [word crossed out] are tired with
