- a small number of giant Pinus
ponderosa. [underlined] The area appears to
have been a Savannah now
reaching a shaded stage in
succession. Ground cover is
largely Calamagrostis. [underlined]
At a higher level there is
a greater abundance of Pinus
contorta [underlined] of 100 +/- years. Most
of this has been bark-beetle
killed + has blown down to
form a brule.
Higher still the jack pine is
dominant with an intermixture
of balsam + some spruce in
the draws + swampy land.

Chose a quadrat on Watching
Creek burn area just at the
top of the hill beyond the trail
crossing. Dominant tree aspen -
shrubbery of Salix Barclayi particularly
at Eastern edge of plot, Shepherdia [underlined]
+ some small rose bushes.
Ground cover Pine grass [underlined]
Set out a plot measuring 70' sq [square]
from outside traps. Traps set
10 ft [feet] apart in both directions,
for a total of 49.
