July 5 (con'd [continued]) [female symbol]'s were seen near the same spot as the 3 lg. [large] yg. [young]
The broods seen were confusing. All were over
half grown. Broods of 12 + 8 were seen on opposite
banks. The 12 took cover temporarily [word crossed out], the 8 took
temporary cover + reappeared as 12. The 3 [female symbol]'s followed
us downstream for 300 yds [yards]
July 9. On river, [female symbol]'s, anxious, flew about + followed
canoe frequently. The followed so far, it was
impossible to count. (see mallard)
July 14. Alkali flats nest (#16) - hatched eggs.
July 25 Alkali flats - 4 large downies - no [female symbol]
