- European Trip [all underlined].
Left Vancouver CPA [Canadian Pacific Airlines] DC6 July 2
at 1:05[?] PM Clear weather, stopped
1 hour at Edmonton + 1 1/2 hrs [hours] at
Frobisher. Here sun was patchy but
already [illegible word] & Papaver, Sax. [Saxifraga] oppostifolia
Crepis + 2 willows were in flower.
Arrived Amsterdam at 7:40
PM about 2 hrs [hours] late on July 3.
Met Bert Chishelm in the KLM
waiting room, then to the Polen
Hotel.
July 4:- Went for a sightseeing
tour in the morning. including
a visit to the Royal Museum where
we saw many magnificent Dutch
painting including Rembrants [Rembrandt's] "the
night watch". Truly magnificent.
In the evening we went on
a water trip with Wessie +
Kaye, down the gentleman's canal
+ around the harbour. the
6th in Europe. The canal
was lined with ugly but
fine looking old houses built
in the golden age of Hollands
magnificence. Was interested to
note that each had a projection
from the gable having a hook
used in taking up the furniture
but originally used probably in
taking up the goods or stock in trade.
After dinner at the West
End Restaurant (not very good)
we walked the Gentleman's
canal admiring the flood lit
facades.
July 5. By streetcar to the
zoo + aquarium. An excellent
zoo with several good modern
impoundments for the animals. A
new born camel was amon [among] the young
seen. An excellent display of
baboons + vervets. Great apes poor
2 Orangs [orangutans] + 1 Chimp [chimpanzee]. Parrots
excellent + included a Hyacinthine
macaw. Many large parr [word crossed out] cockatoos
+ macaws out doors on hanging
perches.
A few African antelope Gnu,
Hartebeest, white faced brontebuck[?]
Nyala + 2 or 3 others. One duiker
buck had been rendered harmless
