cabin in 6 hours. The trail was
very bad - narrow, rough +
marshy + we had a lot of trouble
with the packs - 2 horses down
two broken lash ropes + one
horse - the colt - rolling with
the pack on. On the west slope
of Helmet Mountain there is
some high, grassy range that
almost certainly sees an occassional [occasional]
band of sheep. The same is true
of the slopes immediately across
the river from Helmet Mt. [Mountain]
The Rocky Valley is very wet
+ apparently winters elk + moose
almost as far up as our camp
just below the pass.

Rocky Forks July 21/44 [1944]
Yesterday rain, thunder + high winds
kept me at barracks. Today it began
to clear about noon + at 3 o'clock
we left camp + hiked up to the
head of Deception Creek - time about
2 hours. This creek opens into a
fine timberline basin offering
excellent summer sheep range.
Lots of sheep sign all along the
creek + plenty of winter range in
