Dear Directors of the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association in Victoria,
Concerning the death of Ma Lian we wrote a letter to you and got your good advice. It is now examined by the government doctor that Ma Lian was shot death, and the bullet taken out of his body conforms to the gun in the house of the westerner killer. This is the right evidence. The family of the killer should be detained and be ordered to tell the whereabouts of the escaped killer. The killer is now still at large. It is because the killer is a member of the infamous Canadian Union, which has bribed key connections so that there is no way to bring the killer to justice. However, we have not given up our efforts to redress this injustice. We again ask you to help us by giving your advices. We know that we have to try our best to win this case. We shall give whatever we have, money or manpower. We have no time to waste. Our Chinese community here is small, no match for the westerners, who become even stronger aided by the Canadian Union. Therefore we ask for your favor to unite all the Chinese in various communities to fight against the evil power. The criminal will be finally punished. There would come one day when Ma Lian’s death will be avenged and no foreign oppression could do us harm.
