Greyish-white jade, calcified?, height 31 cm Date uncertain, style of Tang Unique Jade of the Ancient Chinese: The Dyer Ancestral Collection
Lokapalas of this type were made during the Tang dynasty (618-906) as ceramic tomb figurines to protect the deceased in the afterlife. They are also found at Tang Buddhist caves as protectors of the faith. However, this piece has an unusual double lotus petal base which is not usually found undertombfigurines orthe pro�tectors at Buddhist caves. A Tang date for this piece would seem very ques�tionable since very few Tang dynasty jades have been found and those that have been excavated are usually quite small.
