- Falcon. "Peales." Aug [August] 16, 1939.
[page in Joyce Cowan's handwriting ?]
Shot a Peales Falcon in Kwakshua
today. Stomach contained 1 Western
Sandpiper, 1 Least Sandpiper + 1 Murrelet
Identification made possible by those pairs
of legs.
Later in the day I heard what
sounded like a very hysterical + angry
Kingfisher but upon investigation proved to
be another Peales. This bird was scolding
a Goshawk + after several minutes
made off in one direction + the Goshawk
in another.
Aug [August] 21. 1939.
Shot but only wounded a Peales
Falcon on Goose Island.
N. [North] end of Banks. Aug. [August] 19.
Saw a Peales Falcon chasing a pair of
Sharp Shinned hawks.
Beaver Pass, McCauley I. [Island] Aug [August] 20.
Saw a fine display of a Peales Falcon
pursuing a Phalarope. The falcon would
strike + wheel + strike again and again
but the phalarope always was able to
dodge the talons of the falcon. At the
same time that the Falcon missed its
strike the Phalarope would take the
opportunity to gain all [word crossed out] altitude thereby
not allowing the falcon to get a good
swoop at him from above. This performance
continued until the birds were about 400
feet in the air then the falcon abandoned
the chase.
