  • More venison + full pressure cooker for supper. Stove continuing to act up - gas leaking from gas valve spectacularly bursting into flame now + then, - also pots toppled off stove dumping water every where. Quite a show. Had to dump some water over Paul [Joslin] to damp his guffaws. No sign of bats. May 28 [1960] Up by 7:00. good catch of Peri [Peromyscus]. No luck with Muskrat, or beaver. Drove into town to see Peter [Henson] Found Fisheries launch couldn't take us until 8th June Tried seeing other captains - re [regarding] getting lift out, but while all were very friendly, none could take us directly. Peter [Henson] + I drove east, he to show me beaver dams. At Walter Feyers woodlot (5 mi [miles] E [east] Naval Station) struck south to a slow creek. Here an old dam. Few miles father on had to wade a slough + creek to reach lily pond with good beaver dam at one end. Feeding on lilys, salal, cedar, hemlock, capper bush [words crossed out] Mensizia, crabapple, some alder. Large buck, 2 doe. Set 40 more traps near beach for comparison with mice caught in McIntosh meadows. Got stuck on way into cabin + had to winch twice. In evening went out onto soggy McIntosh Meadows. Very still. Heard hooters long way off; never seemed to get closer to them About 3 hooters over vast area. Paul [Joslin] discovered 8. [crossed out] 11 Sparrows (song?) nest on wet ground. 4 eggs. We were looking for bear skulls but had to return home as the mists rose from the sodden grass. Hermit thrushes silver notes dripped down from the new moon - one lone young buck vanished into the gloom. Hail storm at dusk. May 29 [1960]: Awoke to rain which continued on + off most of day. Slept in to 8:30 as it was Sunday. Checked traps - another good catch of peri [Peromyscus] + 1 sorex. Nothing in Muskrat trap nearby, tho' [though] hear splashes now + then. Driving out about noon got badly stuck in road which is degenerating quickly due to our use. Broke winch rope twice. Nothing in beaver traps so Paul [Joslin] returned to camp to skin beasts while I set the 5 beaver traps at the large dam a few miles east. Cut two holes in dam (which is about 60' [feet] long). Pond above only place have seen water lilies so far - apparently this dam has been here a considerable while. Caught 6 mice near beach closest to McIntosh meadow. For comparison to latter specimens. Found group of wrens just out of nest (about 7 [+/-]) They were fluttering about soliciting food from parents. As they worked their way through the forest I managed to get some movies. Presently, 50 yards from original sighting, [illegible word crossed out] 1 of the young hopped into their nest - a hole in moss
